Those who are 65 years of age or older who need assistance with personal care due to a physical or mental disability are eligible for attendance allowance. This government benefit is not means-tested and is tax-free.
The basic rate of this is £58.70 and is given to over 65s who require regular help or ongoing supervision during the day or night.
The higher rate for Attendance Allowance is £87.65 per week and is available for over 65s who require help and supervision throughout the day and night whilst living with a terminal illness.
Those under the age of 65 may be eligible for Personal Independence Payments instead, these payments can range in value from £23.20 to £148.85 per week.
