Outline of our Beginners Creative Writing Course

Week One: The Creative Process

We’ll begin by asking, what propels you to put pen to paper? How do you generate ideas? The first writing tasks will encourage you to lose your inner perfectionist and write freely.

Week one is all about giving you the confidence to unleash your creativity and start writing down your ideas.

Week Two: Character Creation

There are a variety of approaches when it comes to creating a character. You’ll explore a variety of approaches for finding characters and how to develop them.

This will include the powers of observation, how you can use your own experiences, and bring people to life through writing.

Week Three: Showing and Telling

Next, you’ll learn how to ‘show, don’t tell’ with your writing. Our beginners creative writing course introduces a variety of examples by published writers.

Let’s experiment with both showing and telling and see what this means for your writing! This will help you build a convincing story for your reader using descriptive language.

Week Four: Setting

In week four we’ll explore the effect of setting and how it interacts with emotions, character and plot.

How does setting help tell a story, and why is it important? You’ll explore the role of play and environment when writing compelling fiction.

Week Five: Point of View

Who is telling the story? This week, you’ll look at a range of possibilities and how this can strengthen your writing.

Experimenting with point of view can strengthen your confidence as a writer and help you find your unique voice.

Week Six: Structure

In the final week, you’ll learn how to plan and structure a narrative. This will help you use narrative to create tension and keep your reader engaged.

Combining everything you’ve learned, week six will enable you to build a plot with believable characters, resulting in a convincing, compelling story.

‘Thank you so much for everything, Kerry. It’s been amazing getting to write and let the creative juices flow, and receiving feedback from you has been such a good learning experience.’ Archita
