Finish Your Novel Course In Australia | The Writing Quarter

Are you planning a novel? Perhaps you have already started writing it? Maybe you’ve even begun writing several? The online Finish Your Novel Course will provide you with the help and support you need to build your writing habit and follow through to complete the project at hand!

With the guidance of a published author, you will make progress with your novel by learning how to stay accountable and learn which techniques and practices work best for you. No matter what stage you are at in your writing process, weekly deadlines and personalised feedback from your tutor will encourage you to finish your first draft.

By the end of the six week course, you will have a detailed insight into the complex elements of novel writing. You will thoroughly examine characterisation, settings, plot and dialogue as you progress through your project. You will also learn how to set achievable writing goals and avoid pesky distractions. Please note that this course is for adults.

This course is perfect for those who are planning a novel, or who are already writing one, and are in need of guidance.

Outline of our Finish Your Novel Course

Week 1: Get Cracking

The main goal of each week of this writing course is to write.

The first module will focus on the plot and theme of your novel. We will look at your writing aims and think about how you’d like your project to progress. A clean start here is vital.

Week 2: Character

Week two will focus on characterisation as you continue to write.

You will look at your characters with an increasingly critical eye to see how they are shaping up for your story. As character and plot are completely intertwined, you will develop character arcs alongside your story arc.

Week 3: Dialogue

In module three of the finish your novel course, you’ll be powering through the pain-barrier in your writing flow.

You’ll discover top tips for effective dialogue that will define your characters and propel your plot forward.

Week 4: Shutting out the World

Week four will focus on overcoming every writer’s worst enemy: writers’ block.

You will learn some steadfast techniques that will help you to dodge the distractions that may prevent you from writing. You will continue to work on your novel, safe in the knowledge that it remains your priority.

Week 5: Setting and Voice

Module five of this online writing course will into the complexities of settings.

You will discover that your setting isn’t just a backdrop to the plot, it’s actually a vital aspect to your novel. We will consider this in detail as you also focus on the way in which your narrative voice is developing.

Week 6: The Final Sprint to Editing

In your final week, you will be sprinting toward the end of your first draft – well done!

However, the work will not be over yet. You will develop your final synopsis, as well your novel outline (this is the ‘pitch’ you will present to agents/publishers). You will also begin to think about the process of editing.

About The Tutor

Kerry Hadley-Pryce is the editor of The Blackcountryman magazine. Her first novel, The Black Country, published by Salt Publishing in 2015, was part of her MA Creative Writing, for which she gained a distinction and was awarded the Michael Schmidt Prize for Outstanding Achievement 2013–14. She has had several short stories published in various anthologies and online at Fictive Dream and The Incubator. Her second novel, Gamble, also published by Salt Publishing in June 2018, was shortlisted for the Encore Second Novel Award 2019.
