Outline of our Advanced Creative Writing Course

Week One: Finding Your Inspiration

In week one, we will look at ways to stimulate creativity and encourage your inner writing genie out of its lamp.

We will invigorate our imaginations by being brave and exploring new ideas. You will also learn how to experiment with writing what you don’t know.

Week Two: Travel Writing

Module two will look at what ‘Travel Writing’ is, or what it could be, and look at ways to liberate our thinking about the concept of ‘journey’.

We will consider some of the key elements of travel writing. These will include: sense of place; the symbolism of journeys; the idea of stories/journeys as transformative experiences and narrative voice.

Week Three: Writing from the Senses

For week three of the online course, we will explore ways to use all our senses to create engaging writing. This will include looking at six different types of sensory imagery.

By tapping into your own sensory experiences and using observations and reactions to the everyday, you will create pieces that are irresistible to your reader!

Week Four: Adding Humour to your Writing

This module is all about navigating the ways in which you can incorporate a sense of humour into your writing.

We will look at turning everyday moments into funny stories. We will also design characters, settings and dialogue that will amuse and entertain.

You do not need to be a comedian or even consider yourself a ‘funny person’ to enjoy this week. It’s all about connecting with your audience on a different level.

Week Five: Creative Non-fiction Revisited

In week five of the short story writing course, we will explore various forms of non-fiction and the creative non-fiction genre.

You will learn how to access your creative skills to inform your audience and explain something you know in an imaginative way. We will also work on summoning ideas from our memory and write them into an engaging form.

Week Six: Honing your Craft

For our final module, we will look at how we can make ourselves better writers, and find ways to selectively listen to our inner critic.

You will experiment with different styles, be bold with form and emerge from your comfort zone!
