Outline of our Novel Writing Course
Week One: Thinking like a novelist
Maybe you have an idea for a novel, or perhaps it’s more a series of thoughts. Whatever the case, this week, we get serious about it and get started!
You’ll get to grips with ‘thinking like a novelist’ and start planning exactly how you’re going to begin your novel.
Week Two: Plotting your Plot
For week two, we’ll examine what is meant by ‘plot’ and what the constituents of various plots are. We’ll consider where you want to take your reader and how you might get there.
You’ll explore pace, time and narrative drive; create a ‘bare-bones outline’ of how you initially see your plot developing.
Week Three: Character Creation
For module three of our novel writing courses, we’ll investigate how to create characters. What is it that makes readers want to read your character’s story?
We’ll look at the difference between character-driven narratives and plot-driven narratives. This will help you on your way to writing a successful novel!
Week Four: Finding Your Voice, Taking Chances and Flexible Thinking
You’ll experiment with narrative voice and structure in week four, perhaps guiding you just a little bit out of your comfort zone!
In this module, you will be trying out different voices and different viewpoints. You’ll begin to see what techniques work well for your characters or plot, and for your novel as a whole.
Week Five: Mapping
By now, you’ll have a much better idea of where you’re going with your novel. It’s time to consider openings and closings; you’ll be mapping a more detailed timeline or a framework of your novel.
You may already have an idea of what scenes you’d like to include, but where will those scenes happen in the overall plan? What will lead up to them? How will everything hold together?
Week Six: Get a Grip and Move On
Finally, you’ll get a hold of your novel and prepare a chapter plan. You’ll know where you’re going with your novel and how you want it to move forward.
You’ll show that you’ve found your voice and will be able to sense that your novel is ready to be written!
‘I would just like to thank Kerry, not just for the kind and very helpful comments, but for the whole course. I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and I hope I’ll be able to put it into writing.’ – Andrea
