Our intermediate creative writing course bridges the gap between the beginner and the more experienced writer.
You’ll explore specific writing techniques to hone your creative impulse, develop ideas and produce a strong body of writing. The tutor will provide relevant exercises, prompts and personalised written feedback.
By the end of the six weeks, you’ll have taken on new writing challenges and broadened your understanding of character, narrative and voice. Please note that this course is for adults.

You don’t have to be online at any particular time or day. Instead, the course is carried out through email correspondence, so you can read the notes whenever it suits you. There will be weekly notes and assignments over the course of six weeks. Your tutor will read each assignment and provide written feedback. Outline of our Intermediate Creative Writing Course
Week One: Character & Story Structure
To begin, we’ll build on some of the warm-up exercises and character-building techniques you might have used in earlier courses.
This module takes ideas about character and empathy even further. You’ll consider questions of conflict and ‘what if?’ to develop your characters and a satisfying resolution for your reader.
Week Two: Time & Pace
Next, you’ll explore different aspects of ‘time’ in a short story or novel.
How do techniques such as creating a timeline, flashbacks and flash-forwards work in a narrative? How, in any narrative, is time a crucial and complex factor?
Week Three: Juxtapositioning
The third week of our intermediate creative writing course experiments with bringing together two or more often disparate ideas and images.
You’ll use the technique of ‘splicing’ to bring a story to life; discover how playing with connections and clashes sparks and develops narrative ideas.
Week Four: Editing and Flash Fiction
This week’s module tackles what to cut and what to keep. Revisiting and re-writing is an important part of any writers’ craft!
Perfecting the skill of ‘flash’ fiction is an excellent way to avoid over-describing, and to recognise the power and effect of the short narrative.
Week Five: The Museum of Emotion
In the words of A. L. Kennedy, ‘fictional characters whose interior lives don’t hum and gurgle with this or that emotional tone can’t be expected to compete with the genuine and complex human beings against whom they are constantly being measured.’
Here you’ll learn about the importance of engaging emotionally with readers. Your own emotions and senses can help create original narratives that draw readers in.
Week Six: Symbolism and Suspense
Want to really take your writing to another level? Literary symbolism is a key technique to create different and sometimes ambiguous meanings.
You’ll be encouraged to take chances with how you use language, experiment with new ideas and not just find your ‘voice’, but the many ‘voices’ you might have to offer.
