A poor Display Screen Equipment (DSE) “set-up” and working environment can result in significant health related problems, and this in turn can lead to costly consequences for your business. With musculoskeletal problems currently being the second most common work-related illness in the UK, it is vital to ensure that your employee’s DSE arrangements and working environment are appropriate, and suitable for their needs.
The DSE regulations as referred to above identify two training requirements:
- All DSE users should be provided with adequate H&S training in the use of any workstation they are required to operate
- Training should be provided to ensure assessors are competent to carry out the assessments
By upskilling key personnel to be competent in guiding and advising DSE users, in ensuring that an appropriate DSE self-assessment is undertaken by DSE users, and in identifying where DSE users may be at detriment due to their DSE arrangements and / or their working environment, this will ensure that you are complying to the DSE Regulation training requirements.
At TJM Occupational Health and Wellbeing, we will ensure that you are provided with the appropriate “DSE checklist” for your employees to complete – this is called a self-assessment. We will also provide all the necessary advice and guidance to progress key personnel into becoming suitably competent level 1 assessors.
A level 1 assessor will be able to examine DSE / workstation “self-assessment” checklists that have been completed by the users themselves, and where any issues have been identified, the assessor will be shown how to identify suitable remedial action, before escalating to a more detailed assessment.
If you would like to arrange a DSE awareness session, please do get in touch.
Alternatively, if you, or your employee have any concerns regarding any musculoskeletal issues, and / or the DSE / Ergonomic working arrangements, please do not hesitate to get in touch to seek advice on what your next steps should be. We can put all the necessary arrangements in place to manage your DSE obligations on your behalf.
