Case Management Referrals
Effective case management is about supporting employees with health issues to stay in work, or return to work, and so the timing of referring an individual to Occupational Health (OH) is vitally important.
Employee ill-health, and employee absence can pose a significant cost for organisations, however an employee doesn’t need to be absent, or feeling un-well at work before you can refer them to OH. Evidence strongly suggests that a “proactive” referral is often much more beneficial than a “reactive” referral. In being proactive, this allows OH to get to the route of any concern, or issue before it becomes embedded, and problematic; a proactive approach can also assist in the avoidance of a sickness absence occurring in the first place, and will likely result in a speedier resolution to the problem.
By referring early on, not only will you and your business reap the benefits of having an employee who is either fit to remain in work, or who will be able to return to work sooner, your employee will also likely feel valued and cared for by you taking proactive steps in supporting their health, safety, and wellbeing at work, before it becomes a “necessity”.
For any referral to OH, in order that we can provide you with evidence based, expert, and pragmatic advice and guidance that will at the very least allow you and your managers to progress a case, along with a robust clinical knowledge base and extensive experience and competency in all types of case management, TJM Occupational Health and Wellbeing will ensure that there is a thorough understanding of your business industry, and of any occupational exposure that may be relevant.
There may be several reasons why you may consider referring an employee to OH, although there are no “hard and fast rules” that dictate when and why you should refer. Generally however, referrals tend to fall within the following categories:
